Afrikaner Koeksisters with Cinnamon Syrup
This deliciously sweet Afrikaner Koeksisters with Cinnamon Syrup is a traditional South African dessert. It is crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and drizzled with a sweet and spiced syrup. Perfect for an after dinner treat or a special occasion!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup cold butter, cut into cubes
- ¾ cup cold water
- Oil, for deep-frying
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup water
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
Directions:
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the cubed butter and cut into the dry ingredients with a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the cold water and mix until a soft dough forms.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to ¼ inch thick. Cut into strips about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. Cut the strips in the middle and twist each end in opposite directions to form a figure 8.
- Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or a large pot over medium heat. Fry the koeksisters for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oil and place on paper towels to drain.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and let cool for 15-20 minutes.
- Dip the koeksisters in the syrup and let excess drip off. Place on a baking sheet and let cool completely.
- Serve the koeksisters with extra cinnamon syrup for drizzling. Enjoy!
- Store any leftover koeksisters in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
