Afrikaner Koeksisters with Cinnamon Syrup

This deliciously sweet Afrikaner Koeksisters with Cinnamon Syrup is a traditional South African dessert. It is crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and drizzled with a sweet and spiced syrup. Perfect for an after dinner treat or a special occasion!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup cold butter, cut into cubes
  • ¾ cup cold water
  • Oil, for deep-frying
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the cubed butter and cut into the dry ingredients with a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the cold water and mix until a soft dough forms.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to ¼ inch thick. Cut into strips about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. Cut the strips in the middle and twist each end in opposite directions to form a figure 8.
  3. Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or a large pot over medium heat. Fry the koeksisters for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oil and place on paper towels to drain.
  4. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool for 15-20 minutes.
  6. Dip the koeksisters in the syrup and let excess drip off. Place on a baking sheet and let cool completely.
  7. Serve the koeksisters with extra cinnamon syrup for drizzling. Enjoy!
  8. Store any leftover koeksisters in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
