This Classic Braai Milktart is the perfect traditional dessert. A creamy custard filling is combined with cinnamon and nutmeg to create a flavorful and comforting treat. It’s sure to be a family favorite!


  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup ground almonds
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch tart pan with butter.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the butter, flour, almonds, 1/2 cup sugar, salt, and baking powder. Mix until crumbly and set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until frothy. Stir in the crumb mixture and mix until everything is combined.
  4. Press the mixture into the prepared tart pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  5. In a saucepan, combine the milk, 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Remove the tart crust from the oven and pour the custard mixture into the shell. Return to the oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until custard is set.
  7. Cool completely before serving.
  8. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
