Ginger-Spiced Koeksisters with Ginger Sugar Syrup
This delectable dessert is a traditional South African treat that is sure to tantalize your tastebuds! These ginger-spiced koeksisters are made with a sweet dough and a mixture of spices, then fried and dipped in a ginger sugar syrup for a mouth-watering treat.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter, cold and cut into cubes
- 1 cup cold water
- 3 cups vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup fresh ginger, grated
Directions:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, ground ginger, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Add the butter to the dry ingredients and blend with a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Slowly add the cold water and mix together until a dough ball forms.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cut the dough into strips 2 inches wide and 6 inches long.
- Heat the oil in a deep pot over medium-high heat. Fry the strips in the oil until golden brown, about 2 minutes each side.
- Remove the fried strips from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and grated ginger. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
