Chocolate-Coated Koeksisters

This is a delectable twist on a classic South African dessert – Chocolate-Coated Koeksisters. This sweet treat is an easy and fun way to liven up your baking routine! The crunchy exterior of the koeksisters is coated with a layer of delicious dark chocolate for a unique and delicious experience.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for deep frying
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the shortening and mix until it resembles coarse meal.
  2. Stir in the sugar and cinnamon until combined.
  3. Slowly add the cold water a little at a time, stirring until the dough is smooth and pliable.
  4. Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and cut into small strips.
  5. In a large pot, heat the oil for deep frying. Carefully drop the strips of dough into the hot oil and fry until golden brown. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  6. In a medium bowl, melt the chocolate chips and butter together in the microwave, stirring until smooth.
  7. Dip each koeksister into the melted chocolate and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow to cool and the chocolate to harden.
