  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 1/4 cups cold water
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cardamom, and salt. Stir in the melted butter until combined.
  2. Add the cold water and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Roll the dough into small balls, about the size of a golf ball.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully drop the dough balls into the oil and fry until golden and crisp. Remove the koeksisters from the oil and set aside to cool.
  5. In a separate pot, combine the sugar, water, and cardamom. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes.
  7. Dip the cooled koeksisters into the cardamom syrup and let cool on a wire rack.
  8. Enjoy!
