  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup caramel sauce

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and butter over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture comes to a boil. Remove from the heat and let cool.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil, and corn syrup. Slowly stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes. Roll the dough out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut it into strips about 1 inch wide. Twist the strips into knots and set aside.
  4. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Fry the koeksisters in batches until they are golden brown and cooked through, about 3 minutes per side. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine the caramel sauce and cooled syrup. Dip each koeksister in the caramel mixture, coating it completely. Place on a wire rack to cool and set.
  6. Serve the koeksisters warm, or store in an airtight container for up to one week.
  7. Enjoy!
