Vegan Koeksisters with Agave Syrup Glaze

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup vegan margarine
- 1/2 cup coconut sugar
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 1/2 cup water
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1/2 cup agave syrup
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, cream together the vegan margarine and coconut sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the almond extract and water to the margarine and sugar mixture and mix until combined.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into strips.
- Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Fry the koeksisters until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Remove the koeksisters from the oil and drain on paper towels. Place the koeksisters on a wire rack.
- In a small saucepan, heat the agave syrup over medium-low heat until warm. Dip each koeksister in the syrup and place back on the wire rack to cool.
