Vegan Koeksisters with Agave Syrup Glaze

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegan margarine
  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup agave syrup


  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, cream together the vegan margarine and coconut sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the almond extract and water to the margarine and sugar mixture and mix until combined.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into strips.
  6. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Fry the koeksisters until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Remove the koeksisters from the oil and drain on paper towels. Place the koeksisters on a wire rack.
  8. In a small saucepan, heat the agave syrup over medium-low heat until warm. Dip each koeksister in the syrup and place back on the wire rack to cool.
