This Classic Braai Milktart is the perfect traditional dessert. A creamy custard filling is combined with cinnamon and nutmeg to create a flavorful and comforting treat. It’s sure to be a family favorite!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup ground almonds
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch tart pan with butter.
- In a large bowl, combine the butter, flour, almonds, 1/2 cup sugar, salt, and baking powder. Mix until crumbly and set aside.
- In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until frothy. Stir in the crumb mixture and mix until everything is combined.
- Press the mixture into the prepared tart pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes.
- In a saucepan, combine the milk, 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Remove the tart crust from the oven and pour the custard mixture into the shell. Return to the oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until custard is set.
- Cool completely before serving.
- Serve with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
